Overnight Hair Rituals for Softer, Shinier Mornings

Silk, braids and a little oil: how to let your hair repair itself while you sleep — and wake up to fewer tangles and frizz.

You spend roughly a third of your life asleep, and for your hair those hours can be either restorative or rough. Cotton pillowcases cause friction, loose hair tangles and tosses, and rich treatments rarely get time to work during the day. A few minutes before bed can change all of that.

Swap to silk or satin

Smooth fabrics let hair glide rather than catch, which means less breakage, less frizz and fewer morning knots. A silk or satin pillowcase is the single easiest upgrade — and your skin will thank you for the reduced creasing too. Scarves and bonnets work beautifully, particularly for curls and coils.

Detangle before bed

Gently comb through your hair from the ends upwards with a wide-tooth comb or a soft detangling brush. Starting at the bottom stops small knots from becoming big ones.

Try a loose braid or pineapple

For straight and wavy hair, a loose plait keeps strands together and gives soft waves in the morning. For curly hair, a high, loose “pineapple” ponytail on top of the head protects your curl pattern. Always use a fabric scrunchie rather than a tight elastic.

Sleep is the longest treatment window you have. Use it.

The overnight treatment

Once a week, smooth a few drops of a nourishing hair oil or a leave-in mask through the mid-lengths and ends. Argan, jojoba and camellia oils are lightweight and absorb well. Keep it away from your roots if you are prone to oiliness, then wash out in the morning.

Edit tip: Warm the oil between your palms first and press it into the hair rather than raking it through. It distributes more evenly and you’ll need less.

Never sleep on wet hair

Hair is at its most fragile when wet. If you wash in the evening, dry it at least to about 80% before bed — on a low heat setting, or by air-drying earlier in the evening.
