Fragrance layering is the beauty world’s best-kept secret for smelling uniquely like you. By combining two or more scents — or pairing a perfume with a matching body product — you create something nobody else is wearing. It also helps your fragrance last noticeably longer.

Understand the notes

Every fragrance unfolds in three stages. Top notes are what you smell first — often citrus or fresh herbs — and fade within minutes. Heart notes, typically florals and spices, appear next. Base notes such as vanilla, musk, amber and woods linger for hours.

Golden rules for layering

  • Heaviest first. Apply the richer, deeper scent first and a lighter one on top.
  • Find a bridge. Scents that share a note — say, vanilla or a soft musk — tend to blend harmoniously.
  • Keep it to two or three. More than that and the result can become muddy.

Your skin is the final ingredient. The same perfume smells subtly different on everyone.

Pairings to try

  • Vanilla + citrus: cosy meets sparkling — brilliant for daytime.
  • Rose + oud or woods: romantic and mysterious for evening.
  • Musk + any floral: a soft, skin-like base that makes florals feel more personal.
  • Coconut + jasmine: instant holiday.

Make it last

Fragrance clings best to moisturised skin, so start with an unscented or matching body lotion. Spritz pulse points — wrists, the base of the throat, behind the knees — and resist rubbing your wrists together, which breaks down the top notes. A light mist through your hair (from a distance) leaves a lovely trail.

Edit tip: Test new combinations on paper blotters or the inside of your elbow before committing. Give them twenty minutes to settle — the drydown tells the real story.

Store your bottles away from sunlight and heat, ideally in their boxes, to keep them smelling as their perfumer intended.
