Five Minutes of Stillness: A Gentle Breathwork Practice

You don't need an hour on a mat to feel calmer. A simple breathing ritual you can do anywhere — at your desk, on the train or in the bath.

Breath is the only part of your nervous system you can steer on purpose. When we are stressed, breathing becomes quick and shallow; when we slow it down deliberately, the body takes the hint and begins to relax. It is the most accessible self-care ritual there is — free, invisible and always with you.

Why breathwork feels so good

Long, slow exhales activate the parasympathetic nervous system, often called “rest and digest”. Many people find that a few minutes of steady breathing eases tension in the shoulders and jaw, quiets a racing mind and makes it easier to fall asleep.

The 4–4–6 practice

  1. Sit or lie comfortably. Let your shoulders drop away from your ears.
  2. Breathe in through your nose for a count of four, feeling your belly rise.
  3. Hold gently for a count of four.
  4. Breathe out slowly through your mouth for a count of six, as if fogging a mirror.
  5. Repeat for five to ten rounds.

You’ll find a guided version of this exact rhythm on our homepage — just follow the glowing circle.

An exhale longer than your inhale is a love letter to your nervous system.

When to practise

  • First thing in the morning, before you reach for your phone
  • Before a meeting, a difficult conversation or a big presentation
  • In the bath or shower, with a few drops of eucalyptus
  • In bed, as the last thing you do before sleep

Edit tip: Pair your practice with something you already do every day — waiting for the kettle, brushing your teeth, letting your face mask set. The habit attaches itself.

Go gently

If you feel light-headed, return to your natural breathing. There is no wrong way to do this: the goal isn’t perfect counts but a few minutes of kindness towards yourself. Over time, you may notice you reach for your breath automatically when life gets loud.
